Family Tree Maker Advanced

This course is for students who have successfully completed Introduction to Family Tree Maker and Family Tree Maker Intermediate, or for those who have an advanced level of experience with the Family Tree Maker software. Students will learn to do more in-depth research to find and record additional ancestors and descendants in Family Tree Maker 2019, scan and edit photos using Family Tree Maker’s Photo Darkroom, and design more customized genealogy charts and reports. Participants will learn to document their research properly by using source templates. Students will also learn to extract branches of their families to work with or share. Other topics to be covered will be finding data and relationship errors and fixing them and using Soundex (a phonetic coding system) to locate people in US Censuses and other large databases. Upon completion, students will be able to take the knowledge gained and continue to expand their family trees within Family Tree Maker. They will also be able to use the skills gained to produce a quality family history book, suitable for publishing. In addition, those employed in or wishing to pursue a career in genealogy services will learn more advanced research, data entry, scanning, organizational, and computer skills. They will be able to offer extensive assistance to clients or patrons who are working on their family histories or other research projects. This course is instructor-led and delivered on campus. Prepayment of tuition is required. Students should bring a thumb drive with their Family Tree Maker backup file (including media) on it to the first class.
