Jessica Smith’s Path to Academic Excellence
Jun 9, 2026For Jessica Smith, success hasn’t come from a straight line—it’s come from perseverance, patience, and a refusal to give up.
This spring, Smith—an LPN-to-RN Bridge student finishing up at Rockingham Community College—was named the college’s Academic Excellence Award winner, a recognition that honors not just academic achievement, but determination and purpose. For Smith, the award represents something deeply personal.
“It’s validation that all the hard work I’ve put in is seen,” she said. “It’s another check mark—like, okay, I graduated. I did this.”

A Long Road, Driven by Purpose
Smith’s journey at RCC began in 2008, when she first enrolled without a clear direction but with a strong desire to build a better future. Over the next 15 years, she would step in and out of the classroom—balancing work, family responsibilities, and life’s unpredictable challenges.
At times, those challenges forced her to pause her education. She recalls having to leave a program due to family health issues, including caring for her grandparents. But each time, she found her way back.
“It’s just one of those things—we did what we had to do, and I came back and applied again,” she said.
Faculty who have worked closely with Smith say her persistence is what sets her apart. Despite setbacks, she has consistently returned to RCC “with renewed determination and a stronger sense of purpose,” building a career step by step.
Smith’s path into healthcare started with a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) credential, followed by RCC’s Surgical Technology program, which she completed in 2018. Since then, she has worked as a surgical technologist and currently serves in labor and delivery—a role she describes as meaningful and fulfilling.
“I like what I do, but there’s always more,” Smith said.
That desire to grow led her back once again—this time to pursue nursing. She enrolled in the LPN-to-RN Bridge program, and maintained a 3.67 GPA while balancing full-time work and personal responsibilities.
For her, nursing represents expanded opportunities to serve.
“There are different ways you can help people—whether it’s community-based, in the hospital, or in the OR,” she said. “There’s just so much you can do with it.”
Finding Strength in Support
Throughout her journey, Smith credits RCC’s faculty and staff with helping her stay on course. From early guidance in career exploration to hands-on instruction in nursing, those connections made a difference.
“They’re very good about explaining things,” she said of her instructors. “You’ve got people you can go to—whether it’s a clinical issue or something you just don’t understand.”
She also appreciates the college’s close-knit community.
“You’re a face—you’re not just a number,” Smith said. “You can get more one-on-one support here. I like the small-town feel.”
That supportive environment helped her rebuild confidence and continue pursuing her goals—something her nominator says has been key to her success.
Juggling coursework, work, and family life is no easy task, but Smith has developed strategies to stay focused. She sets weekly schedules, breaks study time into manageable segments, and builds in small resets to stay productive.
“You have to make sure you can prioritize everything,” she said.
Her approach reflects not only discipline, but self-awareness—finding what works and sticking with it.
Smith graduated May 15, but she doesn’t see this milestone as the end of her journey. If anything, it’s another beginning.
“Every time I say I’m done, I come back,” she said with a smile. “I’ll definitely get my bachelor’s… and then we’ll see what happens.”
Her long-term goal remains rooted in service: making a difference in the lives of others through healthcare, one patient at a time.
If there’s one lesson Smith hopes others take from her story, it’s this: keep trying.
“It hurts you none to try,” she said. “You may surprise yourself. And if you fail at one thing, it may lead you to something else.”
It’s advice she has lived—through every challenge, every pause, and every return to the classroom.
