RCC awards first Sarah Slayton Evans Memorial Scholarship

Sep 9, 2026

Rockingham Community College has awarded the first Sarah Slayton Evans Memorial Endowed Scholarship to Reagan Riddle, a student in RCC’s Medical Office Administration program. The scholarship honors the legacy of longtime RCC educator and administrator Sarah Slayton Evans and supports student success through the RCC Foundation.

Riddle has earned a 4.0 GPA, excels in her coursework, and is actively involved in campus life. She serves as president of the Business Technologies Club, the organization that Evans helped establish during her tenure at RCC along with current Business Technologies Department Chair Thomas Knight. A single mother raising a young son, Riddle plans to graduate in May.

“We are honored to award the Sarah Slayton Evans Endowed Scholarship for the first time,” said RCC President Dr. Sylvia Cox. Reagan has distinguished herself through academic excellence, leadership, and perseverance, and she is a wonderful example of the students this scholarship was created to support. We are proud to recognize her achievements and celebrate this important milestone with her.”

Evans was a lifelong resident of Rockingham County and served RCC in numerous roles, including Financial Aid Specialist, Director of Financial Aid and Veterans Affairs, Adjunct Faculty, Assistant Professor of Business Administration, and Department Chair of Business Technologies.

The scholarship was established through the generosity of the RCC Business Technologies Club, RCC employees, and other generous donors to the RCC Foundation. It is awarded annually to students in Business Technologies programs, including Accounting, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Information Technology, and Medical Office Administration.

“This scholarship reflects the generosity of the RCC community and the many individuals who came together to establish a lasting tribute in Sarah’s memory,” Cox said. “Through this scholarship, students will continue to receive support and encouragement for years to come, creating an enduring way to honor Sarah while investing in future generations.”

Community members who wish to help increase the impact of the scholarship and more fully support a student’s tuition and educational expenses for an academic year are invited to contribute:
