Outstanding Student: Laura Palmer

Jun 8, 2026

Laura Palmer’s journey at Rockingham Community College has been defined by perseverance, compassion and purpose – qualities that earned her the college’s highest academic honor during the May 15 graduation ceremony.

Palmer was named Rockingham Community College’s Outstanding Student of the Year, an award presented annually to recognize exceptional achievement and character among the college’s graduates.

“Laura’s story is not just about where she is headed professionally, but the strength, resilience and purpose she has carried every step of the way,” said Kaytlin Raines, a member of RCC’s nursing faculty, who presented the award.

Palmer began her journey at RCC in the fall of 2023, entering the Nursing pathway by completing prerequisite coursework. She has now graduated with an Associate Degree in Nursing and is already stepping into her career.

Rockingham Community College Nursing Faculty Kaytlin Raines steps aside after announcing at graduation that Laura Palmer was named RCC’s Outstanding Student of the Year. A complete surprise to Palmer, she gave a brief thank you from stage.

She has accepted a direct-hire position in a women’s and children’s mother-baby unit, where she previously worked as a certified nursing assistant, positioning her to continue caring for families during some of life’s most important moments.

Throughout her time at RCC, Palmer balanced the demands of a rigorous academic program with work and family life, raising her sons while managing a challenging schedule. Faculty say she never allowed those responsibilities to limit her success.

“Instead, she met them with determination, humility and an unwavering commitment to her goal of becoming a nurse,” Raines said.

In addition to completing her degree, Palmer is working toward becoming an international board-certified lactation consultant, reflecting her commitment to supporting mothers and newborns with specialized care.

Faculty describe Palmer as dependable, compassionate and intentional – a student who consistently went beyond expectations not for recognition, but because of her character. She earned the respect of her peers and the trust of her instructors while making a meaningful impact on patients during her training.

Palmer credits her faith as a foundation that helped guide her through challenges and keep her focused on her calling.

Looking ahead, she plans to continue her education by pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and hopes one day to return to RCC as a clinical instructor, helping to train the next generation of nurses.

“That desire to give back reflects a full-circle commitment to the profession,” Raines said.

During a brief and humble acceptance, Palmer admitted she had not prepared remarks, as she did not expect to receive the award. Instead, she expressed gratitude to those who supported her along the way.

“I couldn’t have done it without my friends… and I couldn’t have done it without God,” she said.

For RCC faculty, Palmer’s recognition represents more than academic excellence – it reflects her dedication, leadership and compassion.

“You did it. You did it well, and we saw it,” Raines said during the ceremony. “We saw the late nights, the early mornings, the sacrifices and the perseverance when things were not easy.”

As she begins her nursing career, college leaders say Palmer’s impact will extend far beyond the classroom.

Her journey, they say, is a powerful example of resilience — steady, consistent and deeply meaningful — and a reminder of the life-changing role nurses play in their communities.
