Associate in Applied Science
The Associate Degree Nursing curriculum provides knowledge, skills, and strategies to integrate safety and quality into nursing care, to practice in a dynamic environment, and to meet individual needs which impact health, quality of life, and achievement of potential.
Course work includes and builds upon the domains of healthcare, nursing practice, and the holistic individual. Content emphasizes the nurse as a member of the interdisciplinary team providing safe, individualized care while employing evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and informatics. Courses must be completed in sequences as outlined in the curriculum.
Graduates of this program are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN).
Employment opportunities are vast within the global health care system and may include positions within acute, chronic, extended, industrial, and community health care facilities.
The LPN to ADN Option curriculum is designed for students who have already met the requirements to be a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and wish to further their education to earn an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
Admissions Requirements
Associate Degree Nursing (LPN to ADN) Minimum Requirements
- Complete the RCC admissions process ( apply to RCC, submit all transcripts)
- Complete BIO 168 and BIO 169 with a grade of “C” or higher. (Applicants may be enrolled in BIO 169 in the Spring 2025 semester.)
- Complete CHM 131 (with lab CHM 131A ) or CHM 151 with a grade of “C” or higher. (Applicants may be enrolled in CHM 131 /A or CHM 151 in the Spring 2025 semester.)
- Complete ENG 111, ENG 112, PSY 150, PSY 241, and humanities elective ( ART 111, ART 114, ART 115, MUS 110, MUS 112, PHI 215, PHI 240, or HUM 115 ) with a grade of “C” or higher. (Applicants may be enrolled in Spring 2025.)
- Have a 2.8 GPA or higher from all completed pre-requisite and nursing general education courses. GPA calculation includes:
- Be in Satisfactory Academic Standing with Rockingham Community College (2.0 or higher RCC cumulative GPA).
- Hold current certification in Adult and Child CPR issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross .
- Hold current unrestricted licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse in North Carolina.
- Must have graduated from an approved Practical Nursing program.
- Essay – One page double spaced, typed statement responding to the following questions: What makes you a strong candidate for the ADN to LPN program at Rockingham Community College? What is the biggest challenge you will face in the LPN to ADN program?
- Attend a mandatory LPN to ADN Nursing Information Session in the 2024 academic year.

The LPN to ADN curriculum is designed for students who have already met the requirements to be a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and wish to further their education to earn an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN). Students admitted to the LPN to ADN option must successfully complete the following courses with a “C” or higher prior to enrolling in the first nursing class:

- ENG 111 Writing and Inquiry
- ENG 112 Writing/Research in the Discipline or Humanities/Fine Arts Elective

Upon successful completion of NUR 214, NUR 221, and NUR 223, LPN to ADN program students are awarded credit for NUR 111, NUR 112, NUR 113, NUR 114, and NUR 211.
