RCC Tennis Courts Receive National Recognition
Jul 13, 2017Rockingham Community College is one of the 12 tennis facilities across the country honored for excellence in construction and/or renovation of tennis facilities by the United States Tennis Association (USTA).
The award is presented each year to a facility displaying quality tennis courts with regulation surfaces, layout, and amenities. The recipient facility must host USTA programs and contribute to the advancement of the sport in North Carolina. Renovations to RCC’s tennis facility included resurfacing the college’s six tennis courts, improving access for the disabled, and the installation of a backboard to allow for individual practice.
During the summer of 2016, RCC partnered with the Rockingham County Tennis Association to revitalize tennis in the county by resurfacing its six courts, becoming the cornerstone of renovated athletic facilities at the college. The courts are the first location in Rockingham County where adult and youth tennis instruction is available to all community members and no membership is required.
During the spring and summer, the Rockingham County Tennis Association and the college began hosting Family Tennis Nights. Family Tennis Night is a free event and is open to the public. Mark your calendar now for July 18 and August 15 and bring the family to RCC. The family tennis event will take place 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
The $67,000 renovation of RCC’s tennis courts was funded through a bequest from the estate of Ed and Betty Mooney, grants from the RCC Foundation, the US Tennis Association, and the USTA North Carolina, a contribution from Rockingham County Schools, and college capital funds.
RCC’s tennis facility is used regularly by RCC students, the RCC Eaglemania summer program, Rockingham County Schools tennis teams, county residents, and the Rockingham County Tennis Association.
