Rockingham Community College Lockdown Update

WENTWORTH – Around 12pm today, Rockingham Community College initiated a campus lockdown. Reports were made to RCC Security and to the college switchboard that gun shots were heard in the area.

The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that someone in the area was target shooting.

“Campus lockdown was quickly initiated and college procedures were followed,” said RCC’s Director of Security Chris Smoot. “Employees and students were well-prepared.”

“I appreciate the highly professional actions of our security team and the quick response of the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Department and the State Highway Patrol,” said RCC President Dr. Mark Kinlaw. “We hold lockdown drills regularly and will continue to do so.”
