RCC Foundation Announces Essay Contest Winners
May 5, 2015Each year students at Rockingham Community College are challenged to participate in an essay contest sponsored by the RCC Foundation. The theme for this year was, “RCC: The Right Choice.”
The winning essayists received $300, $200, and $100 respectively for their entries.
First place winner, Tisa Massey of Reidsville, praised the faculty, staff, and student body in her essay.
Massey described the admissions department employees as a group who help without being pushy and take their time helping students set up placement tests, class schedules, and connect with an academic advisor.
“From the moment you walk through the doors, RCC provides a welcoming environment. Instructors are amazing, and with small class sizes, students feel they receive a more individualized educational experience,” explained Massey.
Second place winner, Olga Diaz of Eden began considering enrolling at RCC when she realized that the only jobs she was qualified to perform were those that paid minimum wage.
“At RCC, I found the help that I was looking for, such as computers labs that are provided to facilitate internet access; free tutoring programs which have helped me to improve my writing; teachers who are willing to help me beyond their teaching hours; and counselors and other college staff willing to help me with any difficulty I might have,” explained Diaz.
Being a student at RCC helped me to realize who I want to be and what I want to do with my life shared third place winner Adrian Mendoza of Stoneville.
“I was always interested in history,” said Mendoza. “Once I realized which direction I wanted to go with my life, it made obtaining my education much more important.”
