Diaz-Rios Chosen for Academic Excellence Award

Olga Diaz-Rios, of Eden has been selected as the 2017 Academic Excellence Award recipient for Rockingham Community College. Diaz-Rios, whose academic average is currently 4.0, has completed 47 credit hours of coursework at the college and is on track to earn the Associate in Arts degree. Each year one student is chosen at each of the state’s 58 community college to receive this prestigious award.
“My experience with Rockingham Community College has helped me to be successful. In my case, I feel a sense of belonging because the staff cares about me. They are always willing to help me, whether for tutoring, class scheduling, or just answering a question,” said Diaz-Rios. “The faculty have greatly contributed to my success. They exceed my expectations by sharing their knowledge in a way that I can apply to everyday life.”
When nominating Diaz-Rios for the honor, Instructor of Art Phil Haralam wrote, “Olga set an example and raises the bar for everyone in class. Her pleasant demeanor and encouraging suggestions draw people to her and opens many avenues for dialog in the classroom. Collaboration and constructive criticism are skills that my courses attempt to foster, and her presence in the classroom proves to act as a strong catalyst for this goal.”
